Christine Keeler was probably the most famous woman in the world in 1963. Her affair with married politician John Profumo whilst also sleeping with a Russian diplomat almost brought down the British government. Six part drama The Trial of Christine Keeler tells the story of this young woman – who was just 19 at the time the Scandal broke.
Keeler’s story has been told more than a few times, most notably in 1989 movie Scandal with Joanne Whalley as Keeler, but the six part length will allow the story to unfold properly. Essentially its a human story about the sexual and cultural politics of one of the most revealing and iconic stories of modern times. At the centre of the storm was 19-year-old Christine Keeler – a young woman whom the powerful, male-dominated establishment sought to silence and exploit, but who refused to play by their rules.
Writer Amanda Coe calls Keeler’s story “the Salem Witch Trial meets OJ Simpson – a perfect storm of gender, class, race and power that resonates into the world we’re living in today.”
