What can we expect from this episode
Dean Yates, a foreign correspondent, was known for his invulnerability.
His ability to maintain composure under pressure was crucial to his job at the international news agency Reuters, where he covered devastating events like the Bali bombing, the tsunami that hit Aceh, and Israel’s war with Lebanon.
Dean’s brave reporting, however, had devastating effects on his own family.
In 2007, when two of Dean’s staff in Baghdad were killed by American soldiers, he began to show signs of vulnerability.
Dean’s mental health continued to deteriorate in the years after Wikileaks’ ‘Collateral Murder’ video exposed the truth about the men’s death, and his family bore the brunt of his mood swings.
He sought treatment in a psychiatric facility, where he was diagnosed with PTSD and a “moral injury,” the harm sustained when a person’s trauma has a moral dimension.
Dean struggled for years before realising he couldn’t change what happened to his employees, Namir Noor-Eldeen and Saeed Chmagh.
Now that Dean has experienced PTSD on the job, he feels compelled to speak out about it in the hopes of sparking a lasting cultural shift.
These are the stories of who we are. Australian Story presents unique tales that provide an insight into Australian life with all its complexities and challenges.
