What is this episode about

Although his parents and grandparents were both white workers in Rochdale, Luke never quite fit in. He attributed it to his sexuality at first, but when he came out as gay at the age of 18, his parents were very accepting.

He decides to get a DNA test after being asked repeatedly about his appearance. Luke’s mother has been hiding the fact that his father is not his biological father and that he is of mixed race, but this test reveals the truth.

Luke embarks on a perilous journey to discover his true identity, looking for a man his mother befriended in Portugal with her friend Yvonne back in the 1990s. Luke is unfazed by the fact that all Liz knows about the man she had a holiday romance with in Albufeira three decades ago is that he was a barman named Carlos.

Luke is determined to learn as much as he can, not only to learn more about his new ethnic heritage and culture but also in the hopes of locating his biological father, Carlos. He starts his lifelong quest by enlisting the help of genealogists, family friends, and distant relatives he finds online because they share his DNA.

Manchester-based In an extraordinary turn of events, Luke travels with his mother’s Portuguese vacation companion Yvonne to a pub in Porto 30 years after Carlos worked there.

On their search for Carlos and the answers Luke is seeking, they are joined by ngela Campos, a Portuguese historian and forensic genealogist.

Luke’s investigation reveals more than he bargained for, including long-buried family secrets and the introduction to a brand-new, multiracial family. He discovers that he is doing more than just relieving his own emotional anguish by helping others.
