Dark Matter centres on Jason Dessen, a college physics professor living in Chicago with his wife, Daniela (Jennifer Connelly), and their teenage son, Charlie (Oakes Fegley). Jason once had ambitions for a brilliant research career, but he set aside those dreams to prioritise his family life. One fateful night, while walking home, he is abducted by a masked stranger and wakes up in a world where his life has taken a different path.

In this alternate reality, Jason is not married, has no child, and has achieved professional success in his career. He soon discovers that he has been thrust into a universe where the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics is real, and every decision creates a branching path, leading to countless parallel worlds. As he grapples with the mind-bending nature of these realities, he embarks on a harrowing journey to return to his true family and save them from the most terrifying foe imaginable: himself.
