HIGHLIGHT PROGRAMMING – APRIL/MAY 2022
Hero Elementary
Brand new series
Season: 1
Weeknights from 4pm from Monday, 4 April – Friday, 29 April 2022
Target audience: Children aged 4 – 7
Themes: Science, problem solving, language & literacy, social & emotional skills
Overview: Hero Elementary is a school for budding superheroes, where kids learn to master their innate powers, like flying and teleportation, while exploring science along the way. Lucita Sky, AJ Gadgets, Sara Snap and Benny Bubbles, led by their quirky and enthusiastic teacher, Mr. Sparks, work together to help people, solve problems and try to make the world a better place.
When their imperfect powers aren’t up to the task, they look to their other powers — the superpowers of science — to help them investigate, observe, make predictions and figure out a solution.
Martha Speaks
Brand new series
Season: 6
Weeknights from 4pm from Monday, 2 – Wednesday, 11 May
Target audience: 4 – 7-year-olds
Themes: Improve vocabulary
Overview: Aimed at viewers between the ages of four and seven, Martha’s educational goal is to teach kids new words. Based on the children’s book series by Susan Meddaugh, the series stars Martha, a beloved family dog. She is accidentally fed alphabet soup — this gives her the power of speech and the chance to speak her mind to anyone that will listen.
With two stories in each episode, kids will get to know Martha as an outspoken, honest, smart, confident dog who loves to eat (and talk!). They will also meet the rest of Martha’s family and friends. Ten-year-old Helen is Martha’s best friend. Martha encourages the shy, artistic Helen to be more outgoing and brave. Helen acts as the voice of reason for Martha. It’s a relationship any dog, or pet-lover, can appreciate.
The series is supported by an educational outreach campaign that includes a cross-age reading buddy program. The show is Closed Captioned and described for the visually impaired.
Peep and the Big Wide World
Brand new series
Season: 5
TX Details: Weeknights from 4pm from Monday, 23 – Friday, 27 May
Tag: Brand New Series
Target audience: 3 – 5-year-olds
Themes: Science and Maths
Overview: The animated series Peep and the Big Wide World gives wings to the innovative idea of teaching science and math to preschoolers. Wry and distinctive visual humor, charming plotlines, and lovable characters combine with a comprehensive science program to attract and engage kids three to five years old.
Set in and around a pond, a bush, and a tin can, the show follows a newly hatched chicken named Peep, and his friends Chirp and Quack (a robin and a duck), on their daily adventures. Surrounding them is a large urban park — a place of great wonder and mystery, a place they are forever eager to explore, a place they call “the big wide world.”
Each half-hour episode contains two stories which highlight specific science concepts, plus two live-action shorts presenting real kids playing and experimenting with these concepts in their own big wide worlds.
