Prime Video has ordered a new series, “The Girlfriend,” starring Golden Globe winner Robin Wright (“House of Cards”). Wright will also direct the series, which is based on Michelle Frances’ novel of the same name.

The cast includes Olivia Cooke (“House of the Dragon”), Laurie Davidson (“Mary and George”), and Waleed Zuaiter (“Gangs of London”).

“The Girlfriend” centres on Laura (Wright), a woman with a glittering career, a loving husband, Howard (Zuaiter), and a precious son, Daniel (Davidson). Laura’s seemingly perfect life is disrupted when Daniel brings home a girlfriend, Cherry (Cooke), whom Laura suspects is not who she claims to be. Laura becomes convinced that Cherry is a manipulative social climber and is willing to do anything to protect her son.

Vernon Sanders, head of television at Amazon MGM Studios, described the series as “a suspenseful family drama about the collapse of a mother and son’s bond, shown through relatable themes of love, greed, and power.”

Wright expressed her excitement about the project, saying, “I’m thrilled to be directing and acting in this wildly delicious psychological thriller filled with plot twists and surprising character turns, and to be working with such talented actors, Olivia and Laurie, and an overall amazing cast and crew… so excited!”

Frances’ debut novel, released in 2018, became an international bestseller. She praised Wright’s involvement, stating, “To have Robin Wright both star and direct is beyond my wildest dreams… She is the perfect ‘Laura’.”

“The Girlfriend” is produced by Imaginarium Productions and Amazon MGM Studios, with Caroline Norris serving as the series producer. Executive producers include Jonathan Cavendish, Robin Wright, Will Tennant, Phil Robertson, John Zois, Dave Clarke, Gabbie Asher, and Michelle Frances. The series is written by Gabbie Asher and Naomi Sheldon, with additional episodes written by Marek Horn, Ava Wong Davies, Isis Davis, and Helen Kingston.
