Shōgun, April 23, 2024, FX, “A Dream of a Dream”

Shogun

The limited series “Shōgun” has its final episode, “A Dream of a Dream,” airing on FX on Tuesday, April 23, 2024. The series is based on the 1975 novel of the same name by James Clavell and is set in 17th-century Japan. With its intricate portrayal of political intrigue, the show has drawn comparisons to “Game of Thrones.”

In the previous episode, Crimson Sky, the stage was set for an intense confrontation in Osaka. Lady Toda Mariko, a central character with strong loyalties to Lord Toranaga, found herself in a precarious situation. Mariko, who is also the wife of a skilled samurai, Toda “Buntaro” Hirokatsu, was essentially held captive in Osaka by Lord Ishido. She was forced to make a difficult choice, either to take her own life through the ritual of seppuku or to remain a prisoner, which would expose Ishido’s false claims of allowing freedom to those in Osaka.
