The Food That Built America, April 21, 2024, History, “Planet Mars”
The Food That Built America takes viewers on a journey into the world of Mars Inc., one of the most iconic food empires, in the episode “Planet Mars,” airing on HISTORY on April 21. The episode focuses on the story of Forrest Mars, who, after being ousted from his family business by his father, rises from the ashes to build a global empire spanning generations.
Forrest Mars Sr., born in 1904, was the son of Frank C. Mars, founder of the Mars Candy Company. Forrest had a tumultuous relationship with his father, as they disagreed on the company’s expansion plans. Forrest wanted to expand abroad, while his father did not. This led to Forrest taking a buyout from his father and moving to England, where he created the Mars bar and Maltesers.
In Europe, Forrest worked for Nestlé and Tobler to learn more about the candy business. He eventually returned to the US and started his own food manufacturing business, Food Products Manufacturing, where he introduced the Uncle Ben’s rice line and later, gourmet pet food. In 1940, he made his first independent move into the candy business in the US, creating M&M’s.
Forrest’s M&M’s were inspired by a candy he had encountered during his travels—tiny chocolate pellets covered in a sugar shell. He proposed an 80-20 partnership with Bruce Murrie, son of Hershey executive William Murrie, and with the support of Hershey, they launched M&M’s in 1941. The candy was an instant hit, especially with soldiers during World War II due to its ability to withstand high temperatures.
After his father’s death, Forrest took over the family business, Mars Inc., and officially merged his company with it in 1964. He retired from Mars Inc. in 1973, passing the company on to his children. Forrest Mars Sr. died in 1999, leaving behind a fortune of $4 billion and a company worth over $47 billion today.
The Food That Built America explores the triumphs and challenges faced by visionaries behind beloved food brands, offering a unique insight into the world of food tycoons.
