In the first episode of The Lost City of Ramses II, premiering on Sky History on Sunday 14 April, viewers are taken on an archaeological journey as Professor Henning Franzmeier and his team undertake excavations in Pi-Ramses, seeking to uncover the truth about the ancient Egyptian pharaoh Ramses II’s lost city.

Ramses II, also known as Ramses the Great, was one of the most influential pharaohs of Ancient Egypt. He constructed the city of Pi-Ramses as a way to consolidate power and showcase his ambition. The city, located in the Delta region, was considered the greatest in Egypt during his reign, rivalling even Thebes.

The programme delves into the history of Pi-Ramses, exploring its association with the older city of Avaris, which had been the capital of the Hyksos before they were defeated and driven out by Ahmose I. By linking his new city with Avaris, Ramses II made a clever choice, capitalising on the legendary status of the former capital.
