In the series premiere of The Nevermets, Channel 4 takes us into the world of online long-distance relationships. The episode introduces viewers to couples who have formed deep connections and fallen in love despite the physical distance and the fact that they have never met in person.
The first couple featured is 38-year-old Sarah, a catering assistant, and her boyfriend, 27-year-old Jgoy, who lives over 7,000 miles away in the Philippines. Sarah has been dating Jgoy for nearly two years, and she is now ready to take the plunge and meet him in person to see if they can have a future together. Despite growing concerns from her family and friends, Sarah is determined to find out if Jgoy is the one she can settle down and start a family with.
The episode also follows the story of 17-year-old Jay from Bridgwater, who met 26-year-old Veena from India on a Game of Thrones role-play server. They bonded over writing a romantic story for their characters and eventually realised they shared a spark. However, Jay had been hiding his true age, and Veena discovered that he was only 15 when they started their relationship. Now, a year and a half later, Jay is traveling to Kerala, India, to meet Veena in person and see if their relationship can withstand the test of time and distance.
The Nevermets explores the unique challenges and uncertainties faced by couples who have formed intense connections online but have never had the opportunity to be together physically. As these couples take the bold step to meet for the first time, audiences will witness the raw and emotional journeys as they discover if their virtual romances can translate into lasting love.
The Nevermets premieres on Channel 4 on Friday, May 24, 2024, at 10.00 pm.
