The Water Rat Rag (BBC Comedy, Ted Ray, Charlie Chester)

In 1957 (from 15 September – 1 December) the BBC broadcast a series of variety shows featuring prominent comedy members of the Water Rats charitable foundation. Acts included Ted Ray, Charlie Chester, Joan Turner Nat Jackley, Jimmy Wheeler, Cyril Dowler (twice), Vic Oliver and Jimmy O’Dea.

The Radio Times had a small piece about the series for the broadcast of the first episode with producer Albert Stevenson remarking: “The trouble is that that Charlie Chester, the star of the show, is woking in Morecambe until the Saturday before transmission so we shall be rehearsing up there. We shall then have to dash south, and do our first run through in the television theatre on Sunday morning.”
