48 Hours: The Strange Death of Professor Shockley (CBS Saturday October 15, 2022)
The Strange Death of Professor Shockley: Marianne Shockley, a well-known professor at the University of Georgia, her boyfriend Marcus Lillard, and Clark Heindel, a former psychologist, got together one night in May 2019 for a hot tub soak and some music. Only the professor’s boyfriend was still alive several hours after the psychologist and professor had both passed away. Jonathan Vigliotti, a contributor to 48 HOURS, looks into what occurred that evening.
Sheriff’s deputies found a chaotic scene where Lillard and Heindel were trying to perform CPR on Shockley when they got to the home of Clark Heindel in Milledgeville, Georgia. Authorities claim that Heindel entered the house and committed suicide while deputies were investigating the scene. Lillard was charged with murdering his girlfriend the following day.
“There is good and there is evil and that night … evil came to play,” Lillard tells Vigliotti in an exclusive interview.
Lillard admitted to having no involvement in Shockley’s death to investigators, and a jury found him not guilty. He is not accepted by her family. So what took place that evening?
“The very first thought was, he had to have had something to do with this … Why would he kill himself?” Lillard says of Heindel. “There’s something he’s hiding.”
