Expert Witness: Season 2 Premiere (Monday 14 November 2022 BBC One)
Shallow Graves – Some criminal investigations are so complex that they call for the participation of numerous expert witnesses. This programme looks at how forensic evidence gathered by a large group of scientists transformed a case of a missing person into a manhunt for a killer and ultimately into an investigation into one of Britain’s most notorious serial killers. When the body of a young Polish woman was found in the Glasgow church basement, police noticed a methodical element to the killing and became convinced the perpetrator had committed murder before.
They started a massive investigation to learn more about the killer’s life, including his residence, activities, and any unsolved crimes in the area. Their investigation turned up two unsolved cases, but only expert witness testimony could establish whether they were the work of the same murderer.
Jennifer Miller, Carol Rodgers, and Peter Faulding, forensic scientists with expertise in a variety of fields, including bioarchaeology, forensic biology, and ground-penetrating radar testing, were brought in to assist the police with the investigation. Despite the passing of time, the experts made sure that no piece of evidence was missed and that the final piece of the puzzle was the truth.
