Gino’s Italy: Gallipoli airs Sunday 29 October 2023 on ITV1
What can we expect from this episode
Gino visits Gallipoli, a fortified port city well-known for its consumption of raw fish. Gallipoli, which was founded by the Greeks and whose name means “Beautiful City” in Greek, is now known as “the melting pot of Puglia” because of the many different cultures that have settled within its walls over the centuries.
Gino has a fishy breakfast with Laura, a’mermaid’ hand diver from nearby San Cataldo who makes her living by fishing for sea creatures. At the fish market in Gallipoli, Gino tries the exotic purple-headed prawn and stumbles upon Scapece, a dish made from preserved fish that has deep historical roots.
Gino prepares tiella, the Italian equivalent of paella, by combining mussels, rice, and potatoes and giving it his own special twist.
Gino goes on an odyssey, both on land and in the depths of the sea, to discover his homeland’s true hidden gems as he explores the well kept food secrets of Italy’s deep South in Puglia and Basilicata.
The series will see Gino explore a romantic realm: full of rugged mountains, ancient cave cities, beaches, and clear turquoise waters. The southern heel and sole of the country is Italy at its most epic! These regions are a melting pot of secrets; with much of their culinary fare influenced by former occupiers, ranging from the Ancient Greeks to the Byzantines and Spanish, who all left their mark on the modern day dishes and traditions found in Italy’s deep south.
