Great Railway Journeys

Great Railway Journeys: Crewe to Crewe with Victoria Wood airs Wednesday 17 May 2023 on BBC Four.

From Crewe, Victoria Wood travels to the north of the United Kingdom to visit both the east and west coasts.

Victoria makes a pit stop at Carnforth station, the setting of the classic film Brief Encounter, and speaks with original film extra Elaine Maudsley about the station’s history and its demise.

The next day, she takes the Cumbrian Coastal line to Carlisle, which takes her across Morecambe Bay on the North West Regional Railways service. Victoria meets John Mitton, an expert trainspotter, at the Carlisle station. She crosses into Scotland at Glasgow and takes the train all the way up to Thurso, the northernmost station.

Victoria’s journey south includes a stop at Mel Thorley’s house in Adswood, Manchester, to see his collection of trains and station signs displayed in the back garden. In Edinburgh, Victoria plays the role of “Vicky, Girl Reporter,” investigating claims that the Forth Bridge is dangerous and in need of repair.

Victoria and the crew return to Crewe, where they are denied access to film in the station cafeteria.
