You Were Indestructible: Humans appear to be somewhat breakable. Our skeletons are made of a hard material that can break if we fall. But if we had superhero-like invincibility, we wouldn’t ever have to be concerned about being cast in plaster! So, which approach is ideal? Since it is our bones that break, let’s start by getting rid of them completely. Sadly, it doesn’t really work that well.

Without our bones, we would essentially be immobile blobs. Metal is tough, I guess? Consider making our skin solid metal in the style of armor-clad knights.

Metal has the drawback of actually bending if you hit it hard enough. As a result, you would quickly develop dents in your metal skin and become totally out of shape. What we require is something resilient that won’t lose its shape over time. What we require is something “elastic,” similar to rubber.

When you hit or stretch elastic materials, they deform, but they quickly return to their original shape. In fact, modern synthetic materials that are elastic can stretch up to 100 times farther! We would be very difficult to break if we were made of elastic, but there would be a drawback. If we weren’t careful, we might end up bouncing around the house like an enormous rubber ball and breaking everything in our path. We could always make our home elastic, of course.
