Sherlock: A Study In Pink (BBC-1 25 Jul 2010)

An exciting modern day take on the Sherlock Holmes stories begins with A Study in Pink when Sherlock Holmes, detective for hire, meets just returned from a tour of duty in Afghanistan, Dr John Watson. Together the pair begin investigating a series of strange and somewhat impossible suicides.

All of the ingredients we know and love are present and correct, the 221B Baker Street address, Inspector Lestrade and Sherlock’s superb analytical mind. Good casting and strong writing definitely helps. Lots to enjoy in this first episode not least the unexpected arrival of Mark Gatiss as Holmes’ brother Mycroft, working for the government in some unspecified but clearly highly top secret and important position!

A great opener but would be interested to know if writer Moffat had recently watched the Princess Bride when he wrote the big stand off scene in the college of further education?
