Six Nations Rugby Wales v Ireland (BBC One Saturday February 4, 2023)
Today Saturday February 4, 2023, there is a new episode of Six Nations Rugby.
Wales v Ireland Gabby Logan presents the 2023 Six Nations opening match, which features Wales taking on Ireland in their debut game with new head coach Warren Gatland.
After the Welsh’s dismal performance in 2022—they won only three of 12 games and suffered their first loss of the year against Georgia—the 59-year-old took over as head coach in December, replacing Wayne Pivac. In contrast, Gatland won three Grand Slams for Wales between 2007 and 2019, making him the country’s winningest and longest-serving coach in the sport’s history. The New Zealander realises that by returning to the position, he is risking his reputation.
Ireland lost their lone match of the Six Nations to eventual champions France, which led to their second-place result. They have now risen to the top of the international rankings after claiming a historic series victory on the road in New Zealand in July and defeating South Africa and Australia at home in November.
Andrew Cotter, Jonathan Davies, and Donncha O’Callaghan offer their thoughts on the analyses provided by Martin Johnson, Tommy Bowe, and Sam Warburton.
