The Spy Who Died Twice (9 May on Channel 4)
A high-profile British politician vanishes from Miami Beach’s opulent Fontainebleau hotel, presumed drowned. Press reports abound about shady businesses, “another woman,” and Soviet-style spying. Then John Stonehouse MP is discovered alive in Australia, posing as a deceased constituent. He’s is taken into custody and charged with fraud. But never with being in the pay of an enemy power.
The narrative film, which is part of the Secret History strand, reveals how Stonehouse colluded with the Czech security service at the height of the Cold War. The film also examines how Prime Ministers ranging from Wilson to Thatcher decided not to pursue the allegations that Stonehouse was a spy.
The film includes first-person testimony from those who were there, as well as archive and actors reading written testimony from both the Czech security services’ files on Stonehouse and government records held by the National Archive.
