Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992, Macaulay Culkin, Joe Pesci)
Two years after the massively successful original, director, writer and the key cast returned for this hugely enjoyable (and successful) sequel. This time, the McCallister family are off on holiday to Miami, except for Kevin (Macaulay Culkin), who ends up on a New York-bound jet. Unfazed, he uses his father’s credit card (don’t ask) to book into the Plaza Hotel and is soon enjoying the delights of room service and cable TV despite the suspicions of the concierge (Tim Curry).
Ambling around the city, he befriends the pigeon lady (Brenda Fricker) and Mr Duncan (Eddie Bracken), who owns a proper toyshop. Then he bumps into Harry and Marv (Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern), the two burglars from the original. They’re now not just intent on revenge on the kid who sent them to the slammer but plan to rob the toyshop on Christmas Eve. Once again, Kevin must use his ingenuity to stop them…
Hughes’ script wisely remains close to the original, with the location, Culkin and the two baddies carrying the film in the same way. The climatic battle in the toyshop against Kevin’s fiendish booby traps is the highlight. There’s also the delight of Kevin having to outwit the hotel’s concierge, convincing him he is with his family, with Tim Curry at his most reptilian in the role.
Trivia: Joe Pesci’s character, Harry Lime, shares his name with the character played by Orson Welles in The Third Man.
