CBC Kids Original “Gangnam Project” Streaming Now on CBC Gem

CBC Kids is set to introduce GANGNAM PROJECT, a new 10-episode series that offers viewers an exclusive peek into the world of K-pop culture. Co-commissioned with CBBC and produced by Pillango Productions and Aircraft Pictures, the show follows the journey of 16-year-old Korean-Canadian Hannah Shin (played by Julia Kim Caldwell) as she navigates her way through the highly choreographed and perfected realm of K-pop.

Julia Kim Caldwell, who stars as Hannah Shin, expressed her excitement about being part of GANGNAM PROJECT: “I’m so excited for anyone who’s always been a fan of K-pop…to get to live out their trainee fantasy with Hannah’s journey, and for newcomers to fall in love with everything K-pop. Being a part of GANGNAM PROJECT has been a dream come true for me and I can’t wait for everyone to see it!”

The series captures themes of identity, belonging, acceptance, and discovering one’s truth while highlighting Korean culture. The story also delves into the transformational journeys of other characters such as Hannah’s older brother Leo (portrayed by Taran Kim) and reveals a shocking family secret.

Marie McCann, Senior Director at CBC Kids, praised GANGNAM PROJECT for its authenticity in tapping into K-pop culture while remaining relatable with its sense of humor: “This fun and upbeat series will appeal to viewers of all ages.”

Hannah’s quest for self-discovery takes her on a trip to Korea where she becomes involved with OME, a prestigious K-pop academy. Unexpectedly capturing the attention of OME’s CEO due to her infectious enthusiasm and musical talents, she transitions from tutor to trainee and embarks on a transformative path fueled by her unique potential. Alongside Hannah’s journey, the series also explores the personal growth of her brother Leo.

GANGNAM PROJECT features an original soundtrack composed by August Rigo, a recording artist, songwriter, producer, and musician who has written songs for renowned K-pop groups like BTS and global pop sensations Justin Bieber and One Direction.

The show is co-commissioned by CBC Kids and CBBC and executive produced by Sarah Haasz and Romeo Candido. Directed by Candido, Justin Wu, and Gloria Kim, GANGNAM PROJECT promises to entertain audiences with its heartwarming storytelling infused with culture and humor.
