Unsung, April 14, 2024, TV One, “Stetsasonic”
The Stetsasonic story, as told in this episode of Unsung airing on TV One on Sunday April 14, is one of the pioneering forces in hip-hop. Formed in Brooklyn, New York, in 1981, Stetsasonic was one of the first hip-hop acts to perform with a full band and incorporate live instrumentation into their recordings. The group combined beatboxing, sampling technology, and live band performances, infusing their sound with R&B, jazz, dancehall reggae, and rock.
Originally known as “The Stetsasonic 3 MC’s”, the group consisted of Daddy-O, Delite, and Crown Supreme. However, Daddy-O and Delite, who changed the group’s name and style to “Stetsasonic the Hip-Hop Band”, added more members: Wise The Human Mix Machine, Prince Paul, the Devastating Beat Creator (DBC), drummer Bobby Simmons, and Frukwan, who replaced Crown Supreme.
Stetsasonic signed with Tommy Boy Records and released their debut album, “On Fire”, in 1986. The album received mixed reviews, but their subsequent releases, “In Full Gear” and “Blood, Sweat & No Tears”, were critically acclaimed. Stetsasonic is also known for their uplifting and positive lyrics, which contributed to the emergence of alternative hip-hop and jazz rap.
Despite rumors of disbandment in 1991, Stetsasonic has continued to record and perform together. They released “People In The Neighborhood” and performed at the Urban Matterz Hip Hop Festival in 2019. The group has also pursued individual projects, with Frukwan and Prince Paul founding the Gravediggaz, and Daddy-O, Prince Paul, and Frukwan achieving success as solo artists and record producers.
Unsung airs on TV One at 9:00 pm on Sunday, April 14, 2024.
