55 Degrees North (BBC One 2004, Don Gilet, Dervla Kirwan)

In 55 Degrees North DS Nicky Cole is relocated to Newcastle from London and discovers he must prove himself all over again when his superior assigns him to the night shift.

Nick works the night shift and is not held in very high regard by his boss D.I. Carter even when he gets results. His closest ally is Crown Prosecution Service lawyer Claire Maxwell and over the course of the series their friendship sees them growing closer.

One thing Nicky can rely is his Uncle Errol, together the pair of them are guardians to his seven year old nephew Matty. Errol is a guiding hand when things get rough. “Keep your soul intact” is Errol’s motto for life and one which Nicky also tries to hold true to.

Other characters include no-nonsense Sergeant Rick Astel as well as bigoted bully Detective Sergeant Frank Maguire who consistently gives Nicky a hard time.

NOTE: The title of the series comes from the map reference for Newcastle.
