Arthur of the Britons (ITV 1972, Oliver Tobias, Michael Gothard)

Period action adventure series Arthur of the Britons was a muddily realistic version of the King Arthur legend in which the Warlord does battle against marauding Saxons in the sixth century.

This was an attempt to put the King Arthur legend into a realistic setting, Arthur, played by Oliver Tobias in a star making performance, is here living in a dark, muddy and murderous 6th Century Britain. If there really was a King Arthur this is probably more true to how he would have lived than any other production.

The series also provided Brian Blessed the opportunity to give us another of his brilliantly full blooded performances as Mark of Cornwall. Michael Gothard played Arthur’s number two Kai and the always excellent Jack Watson played Llud. German actress Gila von Weitershausen had a long film and tv career in Germany beginning in 1966. Likewise with Austrian Georg Marischka, he moved between acting and directing from the early seventies on. HTV were clearly keen on attracting an international audience to the series.

Writers on the series included Terence Feely who had recently been working on Gerry Anderson’s UFO as well as Callan, HTV regulars Bob Baker and Dave Martin, the legendary Michael J. Bird and Bergerac creator Robert Banks Stewart.

Guest stars included a young Peter Firth, Donald Burton, Nicky Henson, Mike Pratt, Dave Prowse, Deborah Watling, Michael Gambon and a pre Doctor Who Tom Baker.

There were 24 half hour episodes of the series in total and although it’s considered to be a one season show it took most ITV regions a good year to show the whole of the series.
