Inspector George Gently (BBC-1 2007-2017, Martin Shaw, Lee Ingleby)

George Gently, based on a series of well regarded crime novels by Alan Hunter, sees Shaw as the titular Gently of the title, a no nonsense detective who has moved from the Met and Scotland Yard “up north” to the countryside of 1960’s Northumberland (actually filmed in Ireland and here comparisons to that other 60’s set series Heartbeat begin and end, Gently is a much tougher breed of show and copper).

Gently is partnered with the much younger and somewhat abrasive Sgt John Bacchus who is not afraid of tearing up the rule book to get a result and Gently and Bacchus have a nicely antogonistic relationship that is one of the key plus points of the series.
