Pride and Prejudice (BBC-1 1995, Jennifer Ehle, Colin Firth)

This adaptation of Jane Austen’s compelling love story captivates with its vitality, humour and passion. In a society which believes that an unmarried woman’s sole occupation should be to secure an advantageous marriage, bright and witty Elizabeth Bennet stands out.

Although she has no intention of attracting the rich and handsome Mr Darcy, her lively mind and spirited nature soon have this effect. Darcy’s unbearable pride, however, repels Elizabeth, and she hastily rejects him. Only when events in the Bennet house lead to near tragedy, does Elizabeth realise that her own prejudiced first impressions have prevented her from seeing Darcy’s true character.

This is probably the most famous of the various versions thanks to a sexy script by Andrew Davies and a dashing D’Arcy.
