48 Hours: The ‘Unsolvable’ Murder of Roxanne Wood (CBS Saturday November 12, 2022)
When Terry Wood returned home from a night of bowling in February 1987, he found Roxanne dead on the kitchen floor of their Niles, Michigan, home. According to detectives, Roxanne Wood had her throat cut and was the victim of sexual assault. Despite the fact that DNA from the crime scene had been preserved, there wasn’t enough evidence to bring any suspects to justice due to historical technological limitations.
The case went cold. Then, 34 years later, investigative genetic genealogist Gabriella Vargas began working on a case that many had given up hope of solving because there was so little DNA left.
According to 48 HOURS correspondent Peter Van Sant, the killer was found thanks to the extraordinary work of Vargas, an undercover police officer, and a cigarette butt.
“I believed that this case was extremely solvable,” Vargas told 48 HOURS. “And I believed that I could solve it.”
