Andrew: The Problem Prince: Part 1 (Channel 4 Monday 1 May 2023)
Andrew: The Problem Prince: Part 1 airs Monday 1 May 2023 on Channel 4.
The backstory of Prince Andrew’s 2019 interview on Newsnight with Emily Maitlis, in which they discuss the events that led to a royal disaster.
Prince Andrew served valiantly in the Falklands War in the 1980s. His fellow servicemen have contributed moving accounts of a selfless hero who put the needs of his country ahead of his own.
Andrew was a popular figure all over the country; his fans called him “Randy Andy.” With his marriage to Sarah Ferguson, Andrew was at the height of his fame. However, Andrew’s reputation changed after he left the Navy. Former deputy ambassador to Bahrain Simon Wilson talks about his time spent working with Andrew in his new role as a trade envoy, and how ineffective he was at boosting business between the United Kingdom and Bahrain.
Andrew’s need to support his extravagant lifestyle and his friendship with Jeffrey Epstein — a friendship that led to his disastrous Newsnight interview — only added more stress to his life.
Problem, Andrew Emily Maitlis, host of Newsnight, and Sam McAlister, producer of the programme, tell Prince privately how they initially declined his request for an interview. There was a “red line” regarding Andrew’s friendship with Epstein, so he was told. With Epstein’s arrest and subsequent death in the summer of 2019, however, a frank and open interview seemed possible for the first time.
