CBS News Sunday Morning: Today (S2022EP45 CBS Sunday November 6, 2022)
Steven Spielberg claims that all of his films, including some of the biggest box office hits ever, are deeply personal. In his most recent film, “The Fabelmans,” Spielberg discusses how his early love of movies paved the way for his illustrious career as a director. Additionally, he shares a long-kept family secret with Lesley Stahl of 60 Minutes.
“Every one of my movies is a personal movie,” Spielberg says. “I don’t make films that I don’t consider to have something of myself left behind in them.”
Spielberg says making the movie was cathartic, even joking, “What have I just done? Has this been $40 million of therapy? Who ever spends $40 million in therapy to make a movie?”
“The Fabelmans” is a coming-of-age tale about a young boy who, like Spielberg, has an obsession with making movies. He is the son of a free-spirited mother and a computer engineer father, just like Steven Spielberg. The central character of the movie is Michelle Williams’ portrayal of Spielberg’s mother. When Spielberg was 19 years old, his parents divorced. For the next 15 years, he hardly spoke to his father at all.
However, Spielberg finally shares a secret with the world in “The Fabelmans.” He informed his mother of her affair with his dad’s best friend when he was 16 years old. a secret he never shared with his father.
“In a way, making this movie has made me realize that I had been carrying that burden all these years,” Spielberg says. “And I had to exorcise it from my own heart and soul … and once that was out of my system, I was able to regret that I hadn’t shared that with my dad.”
