Star Wars: Tales of the Empire Debuts Saturday May 4 on Disney+
Star Wars fans have a new animated anthology series to explore with the release of Star Wars: Tales of the Empire on Disney+. Premiering on May 4, 2024, the six-part series explore the fearsome Galactic Empire through the contrasting journeys of two warriors, Morgan Elsbeth and Barriss Offee.
Created by Dave Filoni, the series is the second installment of the “Tales” franchise, following the acclaimed Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi. Each episode of Tales of the Empire explores the choices made by Elsbeth and Offee during different eras, with their divergent paths shaping their destinies.
Young Morgan Elsbeth, driven by vengeance, navigates the expanding Imperial world, while former Jedi Barriss Offee struggles to survive in a rapidly changing galaxy. The series aims to provide an intimate look at the fall to the dark side and the path to redemption.
While the animation, music, and storytelling is strong it feels like the series falls a little short of its predecessor, Tales of the Jedi, in exploring the psychological depths of its characters. The choice of focusing on Elsbeth and Offee, who are less well-known than the iconic Ahsoka Tano and Count Dooku, may have contribute to this perception of course.
Despite this, Star Wars enthusiasts will find much to appreciate in Tales of the Empire, including its exploration of familiar themes from new perspectives. The series offers a unique take on the allure of the Dark Side and the complex emotions that drive characters towards their destinies.
Star Wars: Tales of the Empire premieres on Disney+ on Saturday May 4, 2024.
