Grand Tours of Scotland’s Rivers: From the Trossachs to the Kelpies (BBC One Scotland Monday 5 February 2024)
BBC One Scotland’s popular series “Grand Tours of Scotland’s Rivers” returns with an insightful episode titled “From the Trossachs to the Kelpies,” airing on Monday 5 February 2024 at 20:30. This installment takes viewers on a journey along the River Forth, exploring its rich history and stunning landscapes.
Host Paul embarks on a meandering expedition, tracing the course of the River Forth from its origins in the southern highlands, specifically the eastern slopes of Ben Lomond. The river winds its way through the picturesque Trossachs region before ultimately flowing into the Firth of Forth.
Throughout his exploration, Paul immerses himself in various significant sites and stories that contribute to this river’s essence. He delves into the legendary tale of Rob Roy, an outlaw and folk hero whose footsteps he follows. Additionally, Paul uncovers secrets held within Flanders Moss, which happens to be the largest lowland raised bog in all of UK.
A pivotal historical event that took place along the River Forth is also showcased in this episode – Paul highlights Scotland’s triumphant victory over an English army at Bannockburn. The narrative then shifts to Stirling, where viewers are introduced to Big Noise – a movement originating from Venezuela that empowers young individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds by nurturing their musical talents.
Continuing downstream, Paul arrives at Alloa, a riverside town steeped in intriguing musical lore. Here, he unearths a remarkable connection between this seemingly ordinary location and one of music history’s most iconic bands – The Beatles. In 1960, The Beatles performed here as a backing group for Johnny Gentle -the heartthrob crooner of that era- under their original name ‘The Silver Beetles.’ Little did they know that just a few years later they would go on to conquer global stardom.
With meticulous attention to detail and a genuine passion for Scotland’s rivers, Paul offers viewers a unique perspective on the River Forth, showcasing its natural beauty and historical significance. Don’t miss “Grand Tours of Scotland’s Rivers: From the Trossachs to the Kelpies” airing on BBC One Scotland on Monday 5 February 2024 at 20:30.
