Today Thursday 2 February 2023, there is a new episode of Grayson Perry’s Full English.
Episode 2 Grayson investigates the ethnically diverse Midlands and the concept of Englishness from the perspective of persons of colour in this episode. At the sole halal tea-room in the Peak District, Grayson and his van driver Kirk begin their journey with a chat with the proprietor, Rukiya, who talks about her life as an English Muslim woman in the countryside.
While there, he encounters a group of wealthy businesspeople with conflicting feelings about what it means to be English and learns about the phenomena of the Desi pub, or pubs managed by English individuals of Indian descent.
Grayson meets Ian, the man in charge of the country’s biggest St. George’s Day parade, and asks him if he thinks English pride has become too burdened by its relationship with bigotry and far-right politics to be really inclusive.
Grayson meets former England bodybuilder Leroy at the Afro-Caribbean community centre in West Bromwich, gives competitive dominoes a try, and mulls about how English culture is inextricably bound up with our history of empire and immigration.
Later, in Small Heath, he meets Jaykae, a budding grime singer whose life and music embody a really multi-ethnic image of Englishness.
