Great Coastal Railway Journeys: Morpeth to Amble (BBC Four Wednesday 30 August 2023)
Great Coastal Railway Journeys: Morpeth to Amble airs Wednesday 30 August 2023 on BBC Four.
What is this episode about
Michael Portillo takes a train ride along Northumberland’s untamed coast. First stop: Morpeth, where he encounters a historical collection of Northumbrian bagpipes and learns firsthand what a challenge they are to play.
Michael takes the East Coast Main Line to Widdrington and its long sandy bay, where a blacksmith can go beachcombing for inspiration to use in his metalwork. Michael finishes up work on a metal seaweed sculpture.
Michael travels to Rothbury to experience Britain’s first “smart home,” a Victorian mansion filled with cutting-edge technology and built by affluent industrialist and inventor William Armstrong. The mountainside community of Cragside is equipped with 19th-century conveniences like a central heating system, a hydroelectric generator, and a dishwasher.
Once Michael returns to the coast, he finds the fishing port of Amble at the mouth of the River Coquet, which is home to one of the largest fleets of inshore fishing boats along this coast. A novel plan to market ugly fish presents a challenge to his gustatory sensibilities. Do you think he would try the red gurnard risotto?
