Steve Backshall’s Extreme Mountain Challenge: Episode 2 (BBC Four Saturday 18 November 2023)
Steve Backshall’s Extreme Mountain Challenge: Episode 2 airs Saturday 18 November 2023 on BBC Four.
What is this episode about
A naturalist and adventurer named Steve Backshall sets out on one of the most perilous and spectacular expeditions ever recorded by the BBC. His goal: to discover what lies beneath the jungle floor in Venezuela’s tepuis, which are ancient, sheer-sided mountains.
Steve and the climbing crew are back where they were in the first episode, halfway up the unclimbed, sheer-sided face of a distant tepui, ready to make one final, desperate push for the peak. After that, the expedition will move on to the second stage, which involves a new tepui. Steve climbs into a tepui, a recently found cave, with a group of expert Italian cavers.
The group faces bizarre creatures, long-lost secrets, and the unprocessed geological forces that shape the tepuis as they traverse this shadowy underworld. But nothing could have prepared them for the terrifying, claustrophobia-inducing, nerve-wracking mission of trying to carve a route into the cave’s uncharted regions.
At the very end of the adventure, Steve meets up with the climbing crew for one last daring ascent to the summit of Angel Falls, the world’s tallest waterfall.
