What can we expect from this episode

Susan is spending this week of her beach vacation in Southwold, on the Suffolk coast.

Susan first sees this picturesque seaside from a completely unexpected vantage point: the town’s lighthouse. Susan is tempted by the breathtaking coastline to set sail and discover Southwold from the water. The ride is bumpier than she anticipated, but the stunning landscape more than makes up for it.

Susan plans to stop in the quaint town of Walberswick. She takes the world’s best and shortest ferry ride to get there. After hearing all about the locals’ favourite past time, crabbing, Susan makes her way back to Southwold’s pier to check out one of the town’s most unique attractions. Susan can’t decide whether to laugh at or cry at the ‘Under the Pier Show’ because it’s a collection of unusual coin-operated machines.

Laurence Llewellyn-Bowen and Susan take advantage of the beach’s outdoor setting by playing a round of quoits. Laurence enjoys the beach but isn’t particularly in tune with nature until he visits Minsmere Nature Reserve and falls in love with birdwatching and the Avocet, the RSPB’s symbol.

Susan can’t pass up a visit to nearby Thorpeness. She visits an exceptional vacation rental and rows around the village lake to learn about the local landowner’s grand plan to build a resort for tourists, like a Victorian version of Centre Parcs.

Susan visits the interior of a traditional Southwold beach hut before the end of her trip. It’s safe to say that Susan has developed a soft spot for Southwold and the surrounding communities.

Susan Calman travels to a well-known British beach resort, immersing herself in all it has to offer and revealing all the special highlights that make it a must-visit destination.
