MASTERPIECE/ITV and Mammoth Screen (Endeavour/The Serpent/Poldark) have adapted Henry Fielding’s classic novel Tom Jones into a four-part miniseries. Tom Jones, which follows the protagonist on his tumultuous quest for true love, has been thrilling and scandalising readers ever since its 1749 publication.

Starring Emmy winner Hannah Waddingham (Ted Lasso) as the alluring yet vengeful Lady Bellaston, alongside Emmy nominee Sophie Wilde (You Don’t Know Me) as the heroic Sophia Western, and Emmy nominee Solly McLeod (The Rising) as the heroic Tom. Tom Jones is directed by Georgia Parris (Mari), and written by Gwyneth Hughes (Vanity Fair, Miss Austen Regrets).

Tom is found as an infant and taken in by a country gentleman named Squire Allworthy, who raises him as his own. As an adult, Tom proves to be generous, attractive, independent, and well-liked by women. But he is trapped by his humble beginnings. They both fall in love with wealthy heiress Sophia Western, but their families are united in opposing the union. When Tom is publicly shamed and Sophia is threatened with marriage to William Blifil, heir to Paradise Hall, they flee the manor. When Sophia realises Tom can’t seem to say no to a series of exciting flings with other women, she’s ready to give up everything for him. They travel to London, where Sophia’s aunt, the alluring but dangerous Lady Bellaston, will do anything to break up the couple. Sophia learns quickly that being a young woman in London’s upper class can be a dangerous and cruel place.

Is it possible for Tom to prove to Sophia that he is faithful to her? Can love really be all there is?

In the opening episode Tom Jones has no idea who his biological father is because he was abandoned at birth. Tom’s heart melts when his wealthy, intelligent, and stunning next-door neighbour, Sophia, runs into his arms. However, her cranky grandpa, his adoptive father, and his cunning cousin all band together to try to ruin the engagement.
