We Are England Hanging Onto Home: What Happened Next ( Monday 16 January 2023)
Today Monday 16 January 2023, there is a new episode of We Are England.
Hanging Onto Home: What Happened Next For Yacob Woldehiwot, his family of wife and two daughters, home is a fourth-floor flat in west London.
It’s a roomy one-bedroom condo overlooking the cityscape of London, with convenient access to public transportation and a friendly, established neighbourhood. Yacob claims he spent nearly two decades of his life’s savings on his home in this prestigious south Acton estate, with the intention of making it his permanent residence and leaving it to his children as an inheritance. However, the Ealing council has decided to demolish the structure.
Yacob’s family are the only ones still living on the estate, which has seen the demolition of the other blocks and the construction of new buildings. The city council has made him an offer to purchase his property, but Yacob is concerned that the price is too low and that he may be evicted from London.
Nearly a year after the original episode of We Are England aired on BBC1, the show decided to revisit the south Acton estate to see how Yacob and his family were doing. Is there a consensus between the council members? Have they found a new, safe place to live? Or are they the last of their kind and barely holding on?
