Topper Takes a Trip (1938, Constance Bennett, Roland Young)
Constance Bennett tackles Roland Young’s marital problems without the benefit of hubby Cary Grant in this follow-up to Topper. When Billie Burke spots her husband (Young) with Bennett, she assumes he’s having an affair and flies off to Paris. Bennett and her equally invisible dog (who provides many of the laughs here) put things to right, and she joins Grant in the great beyond.
The same year that she made Topper Takes a Trip, Billie Burke (who plays Mrs. Topper) appeared in her signature role, as Glinda the Good Witch in The Wizard of Oz. Burke used her distinctive fluting voice to advantage in both roles.
Academy Award Nomination for Best Visual Effects.
