Channel 5’s upcoming program, “1990: Most Shocking Moments,” takes viewers on a journey back in time to revisit the memorable and controversial events of that year. Set to air on Saturday 10 February 2024 at 10:05 PM, the show examines shocking occurrences across various fields, including television, music, showbiz, and politics.
In the realm of television, 1990 saw the groundbreaking Channel 4 series “The Word” captivate audiences with its innovative format. Meanwhile, in EastEnders, Mark Fowler made a dramatic return that rocked Walford. However, not all shows fared well; a sitcom centred around Adolf Hitler was swiftly pulled off air after just one episode.
On an international scale, Bart Simpson burst onto our screens from across the Atlantic. Additionally, “Star Trek: The Next Generation” sparked controversy with a contentious comment about terrorism.
The entertainment industry also experienced scandalous moments. BBC2’s BAFTA-winning adaptation of “Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit” caused uproar due to its explicit sexual content. Similarly, Madonna faced censorship as her bondage-themed performance was banned from MTV.
Politically speaking, there were shocking incidents as well. At the height of BSE concerns (commonly known as Mad Cow Disease), the Minister for Agriculture attempted to feed a beefburger to his four-year-old daughter—an action that drew widespread criticism and ridicule. Moreover, London erupted into chaos during the Poll Tax riots which left lasting impacts on both residents and city officials alike.
Furthermore, it marked an important turning point in British politics as Margaret Thatcher relinquished her position as Britain’s longest-serving Prime Minister and handed over the keys to Number 10.
The music scene witnessed its fair share of shocking moments too. Heavy metal band Judas Priest found themselves embroiled in controversy when they were accused of hiding subliminal messages within their songs. Additionally pop duo Milli Vanilli’s career came to an abrupt end when it was revealed that they were merely a lip-syncing act.
Outside of the entertainment sphere, fast food enthusiasts had cause for excitement as the Big Mac made its debut in Moscow. Closer to home, fans of Marathon bars were left stunned as they were rebranded as Snickers.
Narrated by Jan Leeming and featuring contributions from TV presenters Terry Christian, Nicki Chapman, and Nick Hewer; journalists Sian Williams and John Sergeant; actress Nina Wadia; and former MP Edwina Currie, “1990: Most Shocking Moments” promises to provide a thought-provoking retrospective on the impactful events of that year.
