Huw Edwards, the BBC journalist and presenter, has resigned from the BBC after a four-decade-long career. The announcement comes in the wake of an internal inquiry initiated by the BBC following allegations of sexual misconduct against Edwards.
The Welsh journalist, who has been a familiar face on British television for decades, was suspended by the BBC in July 2023. The suspension came after allegations surfaced in The Sun newspaper, accusing Edwards of paying a young person for sexually explicit images. The individual in question was reportedly 17 when first contacted by Edwards and is now 20.
The BBC launched an internal investigation into the allegations, which also included claims that Edwards sent inappropriate messages to BBC staff. While the police found no evidence of criminal conduct, the BBC’s inquiry examined whether Edwards brought the broadcaster into disrepute.
The results of the internal investigation have not been made public, but sources indicate that Edwards has been in discussions with BBC management about his future at the corporation. It is understood that Edwards has been on sick leave, citing concerns related to his mental health.
In a statement released by his wife, Vicky Flind, in July 2023, Edwards denied all allegations against him and stressed that he had done nothing illegal. Flind also revealed that Edwards was receiving in-patient hospital care for mental health issues.
Huw Edwards has been a prominent figure in UK journalism and has anchored numerous significant events for the BBC, including state occasions and royal coverage. He was the lead presenter for the BBC’s coverage of Queen Elizabeth II’s death and has fronted the News at Ten, the corporation’s flagship news bulletin.
With Edwards’ resignation, the BBC now faces the challenge of replacing him, particularly in light of the upcoming general election. Insiders suggest that Laura Kuenssberg and Fiona Bruce are tipped to play prominent roles in future coverage of major events. Additionally, Clive Myrie is considered a natural successor as the lead presenter of the News at Ten.
The BBC has not yet commented on Edwards’ resignation.
