UK True Crime Drama “The Long Shadow” Will Premiere March 21 on Sundance Now and AMC+

The Long Shadow is a 7-episode drama that brings a fresh perspective to the well-known story of the ‘Yorkshire Ripper.’ It premieres with two episodes on Thursday, March 21 on Sundance Now and AMC+, with additional episodes releasing weekly on both platforms. The series focuses on the victims and their families, delving into their experiences during this dark time.

DCS Dennis Hoban, portrayed by BAFTA® Award-winner Toby Jones, leads the investigation into the murder of a mother of four in October 1975. However, his efforts to find the killer are met with frustration. As more murders occur, it becomes evident that they are dealing with a serial killer. Despite lacking substantial leads, Hoban is sidelined from the investigation by Chief Constable Ronald Gregory, played by Michael McElhatton. Gregory takes control of the investigation and appoints Assistant Chief Constable George Oldfield (David Morrissey) to lead.

As time progresses, Oldfield receives letters and tapes believed to be from the killer himself. Yet even with this apparent evidence, the murders continue unabated. The investigative team becomes fixated on the belief that the killer intends to target sex workers. In an effort to flush out the sender and apprehend the killer, they decide to make a massive press appeal.

Unfortunately, this diversion allows the killer to strike repeatedly. This sparks protests among young women across the country who demand safer streets for themselves. Eventually, through a stroke of luck in an arrest, they finally identify and capture him. The emotional impact and aftermath of these crimes ripple through society for decades as seen through different perspectives – survivors, parents affected by loss, and children impacted by these heinous acts.

The ensemble cast includes Katherine Kelly as Emily Jackson, Daniel Mays as Sydney Jackson, Liz White as PS Meg Winterburn, Jill Halfpenny as Doreen Hill Jack Deam as DI Les Hanley, Chloe Harris as WPC Jenny Bush, and Mark Stobbart as Peter Sutcliffe.

The Long Shadow is a Sundance Now Original series written by George Kay and directed by Lewis Arnold, who also serve as executive producers. Willow Grylls and Elaine Pyke are also executive producers, while Sarah Lewis serves as the series producer and Matt Sandford as the producer. The series is produced by New Pictures, with international distribution handled by All3Media.
