This World: Calais, The End Of The Jungle airs Tues 24 Oct on BBC-2

This extraordinary programme documents the final days inside the Calais Jungle, as the largest migrant camp in Europe turns to flames.

Positioned deep inside the camp, five-time Bafta-winning director Dan Reed and his crew chronicle the events that unfold as the French riot police prepare to move in.

A small team of British volunteer fire-fighters, equipped with just a couple of jet washers and an old 4×4, attempt to control a vast blaze which will eventually consume the camp.

The film captures the scale the British volunteer aid effort when, in the wake of the Syrian refugee crisis, a huge influx of donations arrives and thousands of hot meals, wooden shelters, tents and sleeping bags fill the camp. Though an orderly eviction is planned, filmmakers capture the chaos predicted by the volunteers, as shelters are set alight.

The Jungle was estimated by humanitarian groups to have reached a population of 10,000 at its height. Its residents were evicted on 24 October 2016, and now no traces remain of this vast shanty-town of thousands of people from all over Africa, Asia and the Middle East.

The film-makers returned to Calais periodically over the subsequent weeks and months, revisiting both migrants and volunteers as the French riot police worked to stop the formation of a new camp at all costs.

Now, there are no more road-blocks and there is no more camp. Instead, there’s mass homelessness and dozens of young migrants playing an endless game of cat and mouse with the French police. One year on from the eviction, this film tells the story of the closure of the Jungle through the eyes of those inside.
