Back Roads: Brunette Downs Station (ABC TV Monday 9 January 2023)
This week on ABC’s Back Roads, we visit a property that is among the largest cattle properties in the country.
The famed Brunette Downs Station in the Northern Territory employs 55 full-time workers and has 70,000 head of cattle. The land it covers is larger than some European countries.
Heather Ewart learns that the area is rich in history and tradition but also drawing young people who are shaking things up.
Even though the station is out in the middle of nowhere and has a rough reputation, it is no longer isolating its employees from opportunities to advance in their chosen fields. As technology improves, more and more individuals are able to mix city life with the simpler pleasures of country life, such as riding horses, mustering, and being part of a close-knit community.
In this episode, Heather Ewart meets some of them, including a UK grain farmer lured to the bush by backpacking jackaroos to become the station’s assistant manager, a fine-dining chef who feeds this small town, a business analyst who helps with the horses, a head stockman who takes his young family mustering, and an experienced horse whisperer who teaches new dogs old tricks.
Heather is moved by the accounts of the devoted Traditional Owners and experienced Aboriginal stockmen and women who pioneered this sector.
Although it seems to be in the middle of nowhere, Brunette Downs is really home to a major outback tradition. Heather attends the Brunette Races, where she meets the first female jockey in the Northern Territory.
