SBS On Demand May 2024 Highlights; This Town, Swedish Week & More
SBS On Demand delivers a diverse range of international and local content throughout May, offering viewers a window to the world through film and television.
On Wednesday, May 22, SBS On Demand presents the Australian premiere of the British thriller drama series, This Town. Created by acclaimed screenwriter Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders, Rogue Heroes), the series is set in 1981 amid social unrest and follows a conflicted family navigating dangerous challenges while pursuing their dreams.
Kicking off the month on Thursday, May 2, is the Australian romantic environmental film, Suzy & The Simple Man. This intimate and uplifting film spans eight years in the lives of Suzy and her adventurer husband, Jon, who live off the grid. Their simple life takes an unexpected turn, leading them to confront their greatest challenge yet.
Also premiering on May 2 is the German true crime drama series, I Am Scrooge. Set in Berlin, 1988, the series follows failing artist Arno, who resorts to bombing department stores to extort money. As he evades authorities and assumes the alias ‘Scrooge McDuck’, Arno becomes entangled in one of Germany’s most spectacular extortion cases.
To celebrate the spirit of Eurovision, SBS On Demand presents Swedish Week, a collection of Swedish films offering a mix of feel-good and comedic stories. From May 6 to May 10, viewers can enjoy Tuesday Club, Comedy Queen, 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared, A Piece of My Heart, and Queen of Hearts.
On Thursday, May 9, SBS On Demand delivers the Australian premiere of Helsinki Crimes Season 2, a Finnish detective procedural series. Sergeant Timo Harjunpää and his partner Onerva Nykänen tackle unusual cases involving love scams, gang wars, and a mysterious intruder, all while navigating their own personal challenges.
From May 13 to May 17, SBS On Demand presents Premiere Week, showcasing a range of acclaimed films. The lineup includes Rosa’s Wedding, Black Bear, The Story of My Wife, The Nest, and Gloria Bell.
On Thursday, May 16, SBS On Demand brings the Australian premiere of the British dramedy series, The Dry Season 2. Shiv, who is 7 months sober, strives to maintain her sobriety while navigating her dysfunctional family.
On Thursday, May 23, viewers can tune in to the Australian premiere of the German espionage series, Davos 1917. Set during World War I, the series follows Swiss nurse Johanna, who returns to her hometown of Davos after serving with the Red Cross on the Western Front. As powerful guests arrive at the sanatorium run by her family, Johanna becomes entangled in a dangerous espionage network and must fight to protect what she holds dear.
Rounding out the month, SBS On Demand presents the Australian premieres of two compelling series: The Responder Season 2 and Backstrom Season 3, both debuting on Thursday, May 30. The Responder stars Martin Freeman as Chris Carson, who finds himself entangled with Liverpool’s top drug dealer, while Backstrom follows the unconventional detective Everback as he travels to Palma and becomes entangled in a murder investigation.
