Back Roads: WALHALLA airs Monday 24 July on ABC TV
On Monday’s episode of Back Roads, Heather Ewart travels to the Victorian mountain town of Walhalla, which seems to have remained frozen in time despite its movie-set architecture, illogical cricket field, and abundance of Dreamtime creatures.
The historic Goldfields Railway
Heather Ewart rides the historic Goldfields Railway to Walhalla, Victoria. Brian Brewer, who leads a dedicated group of volunteers in maintaining the town’s historic railway and other infrastructure, is there to meet her.
When Heather travels to the snowy mountains of Gippsland and Mt Baw Baw, she encounters a pack of extraordinary Alpine dingoes who have lived in the area for generations.
Heather also learns the surprising story of this town’s changing fortunes, from a peak population of 4,000 during the Victorian gold rush to a current population of about 35.
Heather wants to know if the town of Walhalla is truly haunted by ghosts, or if it is just haunted by its fascinating but tragic history.
