Better Homes and Gardens This Week…
JOHANNA – THE FARM WITH HEART
Summerland farm, located in Byron Bay’s rural outskirts, serves as the community’s nerve center. They have extensive orchards of avocados and macadamia nuts and feature these and other local fruits and vegetables in their on-site providore. During the tour, Joh found out that in addition to the farm animals, there is a fancy restaurant where the vegetables may be showcased. Notwithstanding all of that, the fact that over a hundred people in the local disabled community are employed by the company is what brings the most satisfaction. But while most farms focus on providing physical nourishment, this one also tends to the spiritual needs of its visitors.
ADAM – A SIMPLE GATE
Is your garden gate in need of replacing because it appears OK at first glance but is actually decaying away? You’re not alone, and as Adam points out, a gate that doesn’t close correctly puts our children and animals in danger. If the timbers in your gate are beyond repair, Adam suggests replacing them with a metal frame from the hardware store, which will endure longer and be easier to construct. This new gate’s timber slats give it a traditional appearance, and construction takes only a day.
KAREN – BAHN MI BURGER
Tonight, Karen brings you a fusion of East and West in the form of a burger-Banh Mi. Karen brings two worlds together in one tasty sandwich by using burger buns and filling them with the pate, vegetables, and flavors of a Banh Mi. And a fried egg, because what burger is complete without one? This is great as a quick weeknight dinner or for unexpected guests.
FAST ED – HOMEMADE FALAFEL WITH TAHINI & SALAD
Making falafel can require some planning as you soak chickpeas overnight. But Ed will show you how to make delicious falafel a quicker way. Falafels are all about the spices which means you can create your own blend, depending on what flavours you prefer. And they wouldn’t be complete without a dipping sauce, so Ed will also show you how to make a simple, but oh so tasty tahini-based sauce. Serve with a fresh salad and you’ve got a delicious snack or starter.
FAST ED – VEGETARIAN – POLENTA BOARD WITH MUSHROOMS & ROUGH HERB SAUCE
A healthy alternative to carby bread, pasta or rice is the Italian dish, Polenta. You can make it hard, in which it can be cut up and fried, or you can enjoy it soft and creamy, which is the way Ed’s preparing it. For a nice Autumnal flavour Ed’s adding mushrooms and herbs and a fresh salad on the side to balance out the flavours. For the ultimate sharing experience, spread it over a large platter and let everyone dig in.
MELISSA – COTTAGE KITCHEN GARDEN
Have you ever pictured what it would be like to live in the home you grew up in, but through adult eyes? Melissa tours the home of a garden designer who’s done just that; purchased his old family home. Keen to put his own stamp on the property, he’s changed a more native garden into a romantic, English-style cottage garden, complete with a productive veggie patch. But it’s not all formal, wildflowers have been incorporated with the veggies to mutually benefit both flora. Come take a tour around with Melissa and get some great ideas for your place.
CHARLIE – FEDERATION GARDEN
Tonight, Charlie’s rejuvenating the front yard of a federation era home that has a beautiful front porch featuring tessellated tiles. So, he’s going to complement those with a traditional formal garden and has great tips for choosing the right plants, materials and creating a solid base when working with sandstone. This classic old home will now have the classic new garden it deserves.
JULIET – BEAUTIFULLY BIJOU, DELIGHTFULLY DETAILED
Juliet is visiting Sydney’s smallest home and it’s full of inspirational style and character. While the design aesthetic features a bespoke and raw industrial styling, it’s the clever small space living details that helps create the illusion of more space. With vintage décor pieces and furniture sourced from antique shops and carefully scouring the internet, there is a cohesive theme running from top to bottom. This small home packs a punch that will leave a mark on your memory for years to come.
DR HARRY – PEDESTRIAN CROSSING CHAOS
Banjo the miniature schnauzer loves to paddle board on the Maroochy River, but getting there can be tricky. He hits a metaphorical and almost literal roadblock in the form of pedestrian crossings. The sights and sounds cause him great anxiety with crying, yelping and trying to bite the pole. Can Dr Harry figure out what’s perplexing this paddle boarding pooch before there’s any more pedestrian crossing pandemonium?
