Great Asian Railway Journeys: Melaka to Johor Bahru airs Tuesday 9 May 2023 on BBC Four.
Travelling the 2,500 miles across south east Asia, Michael Portillo is currently in Malaysia. For centuries, Melaka has been one of the world’s most important trading ports, and in 1913, he visits it with the help of Bradshaw’s Guide. The Kristang people, descended from early 16th-century Portuguese settlers who mixed with local Malays, have a fiery cuisine that he tries.
Michael continues on to Kluang, a rural area surrounded by farmland, where he helps pick pineapples and learns how Malaysia’s tin and tropical fruit resources sparked an international food trade.
Michael travels to Johor Bahru, Malaysia, where he meets the shrewd and well-traveled Sultan Abu Bakar, who befriended Queen Victoria and used his time in Britain to modernise his country. Michael finds out that the first railway in Malaysia was destroyed by a ruthless adversary.
