What can we expect from this episode

This year’s Access All Arts week celebration, Portrait Artist of the Year: Celebrities vs. Kids Special, pits young artists against famous faces.

Celebritiy artists Nitin Ganatra, Anita Mangan, Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, Toyah Wilcox, Leigh Francis, and Gemma Cairney will paint Konnie Huq, Lee Ridley (aka Lost Voice Guy), and Chi-Chi Nwanoku of the Chineke Orchestra, and for the first time, they will be joined in the studio by six elementary school students who were chosen by Sky Arts to create portraits of people who are significant to them.

Alongside the portrait painting, world-renowned artist David Shillinglaw will be painting a massive mural, and at Craft Corner, kids of all ages can try their hands at creating art in a variety of mediums.

The show’s objective is to encourage kids all over the country to pick up a paintbrush by showcasing various forms of artistic expression. After all the portraits have been submitted, one celebrity will be named the best of the year.

Portrait Artist of the Year is hosted by UK TV personalities Joan Bakewell and Frank Skinner; an esteemed group of judges travel across the Europe in search of a new star in the art world. Each episode features a regional competition where artists are shortlisted and challenged to produce a portrait of one of three famous sitters. At the end of each round, the judges select an artist to go to the semifinal. The finalists will have their work displayed at the world-famous National Portrait Gallery in London and the winner will receive a £10,000 commission to paint a portrait which will become part of the permanent collection at the British Library.
