What can we expect from this episode
This week on Q&A, the panel will be discussing how to fix Australia’s power grid. Major cities across the country could experience rolling blackouts this summer, and the regulator is warning that this is just the beginning of a decade of power cuts. How will our leaders make sure we can keep the lights on as temperatures rise and coal power plants shut down?
Hotter days and weaker winds due to the return of El Nio will put additional strain on an already overburdened system as people seek relief from the heat. Concerns about the transition to renewables have been exacerbated by delays and cost overruns for projects like Snowy Hydro 2.0, as well as a slowdown in clean energy investment approvals. Should we consider more extreme options?
Meanwhile, the government has passed its flagship housing bill, but it is still unclear when and where these new homes will be constructed.
Panellists:
Minister for Climate Change & Energy Chris Bowen,
Shadow Minister for Climate Change & Energy Ted O’Brien,
Independent MP for Wentworth Allegra Spender,
Independent Economist Nicki Hutley
and Founder of Nuclear for Australia Will Shackel.
Q&A puts punters, pollies and pundits together in the studio to thrash out the hot issues of the week. It’s about democracy in action – the audience gets to ask the questions.
