What is this episode about

The current endeavours of Oodgeroo Noonuccal’s gifted family are intricately entwined with her vivacious writings, archives, hopes, and dreams. She joined the military after leaving Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island) at the age of 13 to work as a maid. Getting a new badge of honour for her efforts.

After World War II, she got married, had two kids, and got involved with the Communist Party, the only organisation fighting against the white Australia policy. There, she met the realist writers and received encouragement to publish her poetry collection, making her the first Aboriginal author.

Rapidly becoming well-known. She changed her name and gave up her Order of Australia award in protest of the country’s bicentennial celebration in 1988. Her visionary bravery and poetic outlook have touched generations of Australians and continue to do so.
